- Ancient Egyptians used to remove the brains from the skulls of mummies during the mummification process.
- The skull doesn’t contain all the bones needed for the head and neck. The hyoid bone, a small horseshoe-shaped bone, is located in the throat and supports the tongue and throat muscles.
Skull Vs. Cranium
The skull and the cranium are two interconnected elements of the human head, each serving distinct but related purposes in human anatomy.
The skull represents the entire bony structure of the head, encompassing both the cranium and the facial bones. It provides crucial protection for the brain, housing not only this vital organ but also sensory structures like the eyes and ears, as well as the mouth and nasal passages. Within the skull, the cranium holds a particularly significant role.

The cranium refers specifically to the upper and posterior portion of the skull, forming a protective vault around the brain.
Composed of several bones, including the frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital, and sphenoid bones, the cranium serves as a sturdy barrier shielding the brain from potential harm, making it an essential component of the human head’s intricate architecture.
