Our Valentine Cake Tradition

In our family, this tradition has been a cherished part of every February 14th.

It started with my mom baking a simple white cake in 9-inch round pans, transforming it into a heart shape.

Mom would stock up on an assortment of vibrant candies, from gumdrops to candy hearts, sprinkles, and chocolate pieces.

She’d give us free rein to “junk up” the cake, encouraging creativity and a whole lot of laughter.

Every cake turned out uniquely messy and delightful, becoming a centerpiece of our family celebration.

This year, start your own tradition! Bake your favorite white cake, let your kids unleash their imaginations with candy, and enjoy a delicious dessert made with love and laughter.

How to Make a Valentine Cake with Your Child

Step 1: Bake the Cake

Start by baking a white cake using your favorite recipe or a boxed mix.

Use two 9-inch round cake pans, greasing and lining them with parchment paper for easy release.

Bake according to the recipe, then let the cakes cool completely.

Step 2: Cut Out the Heart Shape

To make a heart, you’ll need a wax paper guide.

Fold a piece of wax paper in half, draw half a heart along the folded edge, and cut it out to create a symmetrical stencil.

Place the wax paper heart over one of the cooled cakes and carefully cut around it with a serrated knife.

Step 3: Assemble the Cake

Position the heart-shaped cake layer on your serving plate or cake board.

Spread a layer of frosting over the top.

Stack the second round cake layer on top and repeat the cutting process using the first heart layer as a guide.

Frost the top and sides of the stacked heart-shaped cake with white icing, smoothing it as best you can.

Step 4: Decorate with Candies

Here’s where the fun begins!

Lay out a selection of colorful candies like gumdrops, candy hearts, chocolate pieces, sprinkles, and more.

Let your kids go wild “junking up” the cake however they like.

Whether it’s creating patterns, spelling out words, or piling on as much candy as possible, the results will always be unique and special.

Step 5: Enjoy Your Masterpiece

Once the decorating is done, step back and admire your family’s creation.

Snap some photos to remember the fun, then dig in together for a sweet treat that tastes as good as the memories you just made.

This Valentine cake activity is more than just baking — it’s about letting your kids express themselves, sharing laughs, and building traditions that they’ll treasure for years to come.
