Mario Costume Basics
I wanted a classic Mario and Luigi look without complicated sewing patterns or expensive costume pieces, so I started with the basics: I bought my boys denim overalls, one red shirt and hat (for Mario), and one green shirt and hat (for Luigi).
That simple foundation instantly sets the stage for these iconic characters.
Mario Brothers Hats
Next came the hats.
I purchased iron-on letters to match Mario and Luigi, then sewed them onto the front of each hat to make sure they stayed put through a full night of trick-or-treating and kid-level excitement.
It was a quick step, but it made the costumes look polished instead of thrown together.
And honestly, you can easily purchase these Mario hats already stenciled.
Oversized Buttons
For the oversized buttons on the overalls, I used yellow and black felt.
I cut large yellow circles and added black felt details, then attached them to the overall straps to recreate that classic Mario Brothers look.
These buttons are such a small detail, but they make a huge visual impact and really sell the costume.
Costume Finishing Touches
And of course — don’t forget the fake mustache.
That final touch transforms a kid in overalls into Mario in seconds and adds just the right amount of playful charm.
