Experience the Brand New Navy Pier Chicago Ferris Wheel

To kick off Camp Jenny right, we decided to head down to Chicago for the day. But the one thing we were most excited about was getting to go on the brand spanking new Navy Pier Ferris Wheel! The experience did not disappoint. This post contains affiliate links.

The new ferris wheel, which Chicago is calling the Centennial Wheel because of Navy Pier’s 100th anniversary, just opened this past Memorial Day Weekend (2016). And the first thing you can easily appreciate is Chicago officials made sure this new ferris wheel makes an architectural statement and is a fabulous addition to the skyline.

While waiting, you really get the majesty of this new addition. The Centennial Wheel is gorgeous!

The nearly 200-foot wheel is 50 feet taller than its predecessor, accommodates up to 180 more passengers per ride and features temperature controlled gondolas that enable it to be operational 365 days year. I mean, can you imagine trying to ride an open air ferris wheel during the winter in Chicago? Brrr!

We weren’t sure what to expect with the new Navy Pier ferris wheel. But when you enter the car, there are four seats on either side, so up to 8 people can fit into one car.

Despite being a windy day (would you expect anything less from Chicago, folks), the car didn’t rock. So for people that might be a little nervous, don’t be. The car itself felt air conditioned and was quite comfortable.

You’re surrounded by 360 degree views, which are quite spectacular. We went fulling around several times, really giving us a chance to marvel at the ferris wheel itself and then the views.

Here’s our ride up!

Nightly, the magic of the Ferris wheel lights up Chicago’s skyline with a show that is be coordinated with Navy Pier’s Aon Summer Fireworks on Wednesdays and Saturdays and other fireworks shows that are held, including on July 15th to commemorate the Pier’s 100th birthday.

You can find pricing and free days (oh yes, I said free days) on the Navy Pier site.
