Where Does Eggnog Come From
The origins of eggnog are rooted in the rich culinary traditions of Europe and North America.
Eggnog’s lineage can be traced back to medieval Europe, where it shares a heritage with a range of milk-based and spiced beverages. During this period, people would mix eggs with milk, spices, and often alcoholic spirits to create special drinks for festive occasions.
In England, a drink called “posset” gained popularity, made by curdling milk or cream with ale or wine and flavored with spices. Over time, the ale or wine was substituted with spirits like brandy or rum, creating a precursor to the modern eggnog.
Eggnog’s journey continued as European settlers arrived in North America, bringing their culinary traditions with them. The colonists adapted these recipes to local ingredients and preferences.
In the American colonies, rum was abundant and affordable, so it became a common addition to the creamy, spiced beverage.

The term “eggnog” itself is thought to have emerged in the 18th century, with “nog” possibly originating from the word “noggin,” referring to a small wooden mug used to serve alcoholic drinks.

Today, eggnog remains an integral part of holiday celebrations in many countries, with each region adding its own unique twist to this festive beverage.

When I got an Eggnog Latte from Starbucks a few weeks ago, they were training a new employee and they used equal parts eggnog (a very cheap brand) and 2% milk. It tasted pretty great even with fewer calories. Just thought I would mention that for someone who might want to spare a few calories. I’m sure half and half would taste creamier though and would be very nice. 🙂
