When the children were toddlers, we were always looking for incredibly simple toddler play idea — so we came up with this homemade kitchen rock band.

If you have toddlers in the house, you know just how exhausting it can be coming up with new play ideas.

Some days, you just want it to be SIMPLE!

Simple Toddler Play! Homemade Kitchen Rock Band

When my boys were toddlers, my husband often traveled every other week.

It was a lot of time on my own with two boys.

I often felt overwhelmed coming up with new ideas to keep them busy (and keep me sane). These guys were active!

But one thing they both absolutely loved was making noise.

I remember thinking… how can I direct their energy into something fun and positive?

That’s when it hit me… they should hit on the kitchen pots and pans.

But it doesn’t stop there. Read on! 

Kitchen Drum Sticks

Before you even begin to think of what you can use as a set of drums, you need to think about what you will use for your drum sticks.

Get creative from the get go!

We always grabbed different kitchen utensils that would not only sound different but also feel different when they made contact with the pan.

Some ideas to get your juices flowing…

• Wooden spoon
• Whisk
• Basting Brush
• Silicone Spatula
• Cooking Spatula
• Plastic Spoon

Kitchen Percussion Instruments

While pots and pans are certainly the most obvious route to go, why not branch out?

Think about any kind of container you might have in your kitchen.

You know all of those tupperware containers stacking up in your drawers — now’s the time to get them ALL out!

Percussion Ideas:

• Pots
• Pans
• Colander
• Tupperware
• Plastic Mixing Bowls
• Metal Mixing Bowls
• Cookie Sheet
• Roasting Pan
• Baking Pans (for cakes, breads, etc.)
• Plastic Cups
• Cutting Board

Experiment with Sound

There are a hundred ways you can experiment with sound with your homemade rock band!

For example, take the bowls from a complete set and see if the different sized bowls make a different sound.

How do they sound different?

Now pick a single bowl and see what the different kitchen utensils sound like when you beat on it.

Is there a difference?

Is one louder than the other?

Does one utensil make a higher sound than the other?

What if you try the same utensils on a bowl from a different set?

Perhaps plastic versus metal?

Why not try arranging your percussion instruments in order.

First, line them up biggest to smallest.

Now, line them up by the sound they make — highest to lowest.

The variations are endless!

Practice Rhythms

Although your toddler won’t be able to repeat difficult rhythms, why not have him tap out a rhythm and have you repeat it.

It can be a really fun game — and toddlers love being able to “trick” their parents and see their parents not be able to repeat the same rhythm.

Rock Out!

And while you’re at it, don’t forget to rock out!

That’s the whole point 😀 Put on some tunes your toddler loves and tap out the beat.

Or tap out the melody.

Or just make noise noise noise!
