How Rudolph Was Made

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was created in 1939 by Robert L. May, a copywriter for the Montgomery Ward department store.

The store wanted to create an original Christmas storybook to give to children during the holiday season, and May came up with the idea of a reindeer with a glowing red nose.

Inspired by his own experiences feeling different as a child, he wrote the story of Rudolph, who was initially mocked for his bright nose but ultimately became a hero when he used it to guide Santa’s sleigh through a foggy Christmas Eve.
