The fact is I don’t want to use harsh chemicals in my house. But I HAD to beat that shoe odor!
Then I heard that Purification Essential Oil might work. The skeptic in me didn’t believe. Did Young Living’s Purification Essential Oil work on getting rid of shoe odor?
Fight Shoe Odor First
Of course, the most obvious way to keep your shoes from smelling awful is to not let them smell in the first place. Here are some tricks to keep your feet from smelling up your shoes in the first place.
Clean Your Feet
Properly cleaning your feet is key in keeping your shoes smelling lovely. But the fact is your feet can sweat, creating moisture that make that horrible shoe odor.
Keep Your Feet Dry
To keep your feet as dry as possible, you can spray your feet with antiperspirant. You can also sprinkle your feet with talcum powder, baking soda or corn starch.
Fight the Bacteria
Fight the bacteria your feet are breeding by using anti-bacterial hand sanitizer on them. I know it sounds strange, but it kills the bacteria at the source. Also, use antibacterial soap in the shower to help out.

How to Get Rid of Shoe Odor Naturally
With summer approaching, I’ve been wearing a favorite pair of shoes without socks. And I’m a busy mom who’s running around, so my feet can get hot. Not the greatest recipe for good-smelling shoes. (This post contains affiliate links.)
I was sitting at my desk last week when I realized that I could actually SMELL my shoes while I was wearing them. Oh the horror!
I recently started using essential oils and wondered how on earth they could combat my shoe odor? I was wondering how to get rid of shoe odor naturally, without harsh chemicals.
After a little bit of homework, it seemed like Young Living’s Purification Essential Oil was the answer for me. I decided to try it. Right before the three-day weekend, I placed several drops of Purification right into my shoes and let it do its work overnight.
Young Living’s Purification Essential Oil
Purification is a wonderful blend of essential oils that helps minimize unpleasant smells, which can be such a relief for so many who are particularly sensitive to smells. Purification has a somewhat strong, very clean smell. Purification is an amazing proprietary blend of 6 oils including Citronella, Lemongrass, Rosemary, Melaleuca (tea tree), Lavender, and Myrtle.

Purification Essential Oil Worked on Shoe Odor!
I was skeptical when I placed the drops of Purification essential oil into my shoes. In fact, I’m the biggest skeptic when it comes to some of this stuff. But when I went to check my shoes the next morning, my nose couldn’t believe it! My shoes smelled wonderful!
But the BIG question was would the oils continue to work? And would it just cover up the smell or actually defeat it? It was a three-day weekend, after all. And I was planning on wearing these shoes for the entire time.
So was I able to get rid of shoe odor naturally? I can unequivocally say YES! Purification essential oil worked like a charm. My shoes still smell fresh! Young Living’s Purification Essential Oil defeated my shoe odor.
Now if you don’t want to put Purification Essential Oil drops into your shoes, you can also put some on a cotton ball and place them in each shoe to combat the odor. But for me, taking a one-two punch with Purification essential oil did the trick!

I will have to remember this next time I get super smelly shoes. I also saw someone using old dried put tea bags too. I need to try essential oils.
I have to say that I’m loving my essential oils journey. I’m quite surprised at some of the things we’ve been using for it in the house. (Oh, and BTW — one week later and my shoes still smell great. Who knew?!?)
I need to give this a try! I have some shoes that I don’t want to wear because they have become smelly from so much summer wear.
Oh, then this will definitely do the trick for you! I seriously couldn’t stand my shoes anymore… but they’re still fresh. I wouldn’t believe it if I hadn’t done it myself.
I seriously need to do this! I can’t tell you how badly not only MY shoes stink, but my daughter’s shoes are so bad I gag when I’m near them when she takes them off her feet! Her socks are even worse… I’m throwing up a little in my mouth as I write this. GAH!!
I’m going to ask my friend for this oil… it will be a miracle if this works! NOTHING has up til now!
You’re going to be pleasantly surprised. Just don’t go overboard! A couple of drops will make a HUGE difference. And be sure to let the oils completely get absorbed and dried before wearing.
Have you experienced people saying that the purification oil smell is too strong and it pissed them off?
If people use too much, then yes. People seem to think that more is better. But it’s strong so just a couple of drops will do.
Wow great tips, i was use tea leaf but my husband “stronger” than that 🙂 i will try your ways, hope it going well!
After a couple of weeks of wearing without socks, I just added a couple more drops. Odor completely solved! 😀
Nice tips. Thanks for share
Nothing has worked for my stinky shoes so far, its getting to be quite embarrassing…what did your shoes smell like before and after the oil?
Good grief… my shoes smelled horrible! Afterward, they had a pleasant, slightly musky scent — not the toxic smell of sweaty feet. I’ve recommended this trick to all of my neighbors and my sister-in-law… they all swear by it after trying it.
Ugh yes I will have to try this… Gotta love being sockless in hot weather… In that last photo it looks as if you’re about to place your shoe over my face to prove it works haha
Haha! No, but this trick definitely works. I was just checking to make sure we have some left to get us through this summer as well.
I love Purification! There is a problem with the drainage in the house we are renting. When the laundry drains a terrible odor comes from the kitchen sink! Keep the purification by the sink and just one drop does the trick! Speaking of laundry there are many great laundry applications as well! Thanks for this post not sure why I have not already thought of it!
As someone who constantly has smelly gym shoes, this is an awesome article! Thank you 🙂
Thank you!!! I just stumbled on the article in Google search for shoe odor! I am using Purification in my husband’s work boots tonight!!! : )
You won’t believe the difference! And with summer around, I made SURE we have some in the house 🙂
Thank you. I am using TONIGHT!!
Did you mix drops with water or only the drops and if so how many pretty please?
I do not mix the mixture with any water… but I only put in several drops into each shoe. If it’s *really* bad I may put a couple drops near the toe and then on the heel. But be sure to let it dry.

I will try this. My granddaughter’s sport sandals are awful. I thought our cat missed the litter box until we took the sandals outside and the odor was gone in the house
Two male teens and no smelly shoes in our house 😀
