Earth Day Science Experiment for Kids
This Earth Day Science activity creates a chemical reaction that is not only visually stimulating but also provides an opportunity for kids to learn about the properties of gases.
Combining vinegar and baking soda creates a chemical reaction that produces carbon dioxide gas.
The best part? It’s easy to set up with simple household ingredients

What is Carbon Dioxide?
Carbon dioxide gas is an invisible gas that is all around us, just like the air we breathe.
We can’t see it, but we can sometimes feel it, especially if we breathe in too much of it.
When we breathe in oxygen, our bodies use it up and make carbon dioxide gas as a waste product.
This gas is important because too much of it in the air can be harmful to the environment and the things that live in it, including plants and animals.
When we do experiments with vinegar and baking soda, we can see how carbon dioxide gas is made and learn more about its properties.
Earth Day Science Activity for Kids
Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22nd to raise awareness and support for environmental protection.
It’s a great opportunity to teach children about the importance of taking care of our planet.
Engaging kids in fun and interactive Earth Day activities can help them understand the impact of their actions on the environment.
One exciting activity to consider is an Earth Day science experiment that teaches children about environmental changes and sustainability.
This activity can be a fun and educational way to celebrate Earth Day with children of all ages.
Supplies:
- baking soda
- vinegar
- green food coloring
- blue food coloring
- small bowls
- dropper
- round pan
- stirring straws
- spatula
Directions for earth day science:
Fill the small bowls with vinegar (about ¾ full).
Add about 5 drops of green food coloring to a bowl. Stir well.
Add about 5 drops of blue food coloring to the other bowl. Stir well.
Pour baking soda into the pan and spread out into an even layer using a spatula.
Fill the dropper with the green colored vinegar. Drop the vinegar onto the baking soda around the pan to represent ‘land.’ Watch the fizzy reaction!
Fill the dropper with the blue colored vinegar. Drop the vinegar onto the baking soda around the pan to represent ‘water.’ Watch the fizzy reaction!
Continue this process until all of the baking soda is colored either green or blue to represent Earth.
