Cheap Stocking Stuffers $5 and Under
As a child, I remember the excitement of sneaking downstairs to see if Santa had visited.
Oh the joy of seeing all of the presents!
Sure, Christmas isn’t just about the presents.
But don’t you remember the feeling of knowing someone understood what a good kid you were (or at least all of your effort in trying to be good).
As an adult, I now love filing up the stockings of the other grown-ups in the house — whether it’s my husband or my folks if they’re visiting for the holidays.

Even when I was barely making any money, I could fill up everyone’s stockings with cheap stocking stuffers — just because something was inexpensive didn’t make anyone less appreciative.
History of Christmas Stockings
The history of the Christmas stocking is believed to have originated from the story of Saint Nicholas.
According to the story, Saint Nicholas noticed that a poor man was unable to provide dowries for his three daughters.
So, he filled their stockings, which were hanging by the fireplace to dry, with gold coins.
Since then, stockings have become an essential part of Christmas tradition.
Children hang stockings, usually made of cloth, by the fireplace or on a mantle, in the hope that Santa Claus will fill them with gifts and candies on Christmas Eve.

Christmas stockings are my favorite part of Christmas morning. When my mother-in-law, Helen, was 81 years old, my husband and I visited his parents for Christmas. We had NO money, but I got free little vials of perfume from cosmetics counters, sent away for premiums for using products, and spent very much time in Walgreen’s. We used small handmade gifts and used books; anything would’ve worked. We filled the stockings after they went to bed and hung them on the backs of the chairs in the kitchen. Then we waited until they came out and saw the Christmas surprise. Helen was so excited. We heard her say, “This is the first Christmas sock I’ve ever had.” What a joyful holiday we all shared.
Thanks for the sacking stuffer ideas.
That’s so unbelievably sweet! And to think it was her first Christmas stocking. It must have overwhelmed your heart 😀 <3
I love your ideas! Trying to come up with small gift ideas is difficult at times. This list will certainly be useful for me for other times besides Christmas. I am a nursing director and these ideas are perfect for small gift bags as appreciation and rewards for my nursing department. Thanks again.
These would definitely be a great guide for appreciation bags, too 🙂 And I bet your nursing staff would appreciate them. Happy giving!
Thank you for the ideas for the young kids. I’m a Great Aunt. Looking for ideas so I don’t have to ask Mom, Dad or Nana. Love bubble bath idea.
