This play dough is not only fun to shape and mold but also offers the promise of a calming and sensorial journey.
Within the play dough, oatmeal adds a soft and comforting texture, enhancing the tactile experience as children knead and shape it. It’s like having a little spa session right in the tub, creating a unique opportunity for relaxation and sensory exploration.
How to Use Bath Play Dough
Using bath play dough can turn bath time into a fun and sensory-rich experience for kids.
Here are the steps on how to use bath play dough:
Introduce the Bath Play Dough: Before placing your child in the tub, give them the bath play dough. Provide them with a small amount to start, as it can expand a bit in the water.
Let Them Explore: Encourage your child to knead, squeeze, mold and shape the bath play dough. They can make fun shapes, creatures or anything their imagination desires. The oatmeal texture in the bath play dough adds a unique sensory element.
Add Bath Toys (Optional): If your child enjoys bath toys, consider adding them to the bathwater. These can interact with the bath play dough creations. For example, toy animals can “swim” alongside the dough creatures.
Enjoy Creative Play: As your child plays with the bath play dough, you can engage them in imaginative play. Encourage them to tell stories, create scenarios or make up adventures with their play dough creations.

Supplies Needed for Bathtime Play Dough
To create this delightful experience, you’ll need a few simple supplies that add an extra dimension of fun and creativity to your child’s daily bath routine.
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1 cup water
- ½ cup oatmeal
- ½ cup corn starch
- ¼ cup kid’s bath soap (I used Honest Company)
- 8 drops lavender essential oil
- 1 teaspoon purple mica powder
Directions to Make Bath Play Dough
Begin by pouring the water over the oatmeal and allowing it to soak for 15 minutes. Afterward, strain the mixture.
Next, combine the mica powder with the baking soda. Stir until you achieve your desired color. You may need to add more mica powder for a more vibrant hue.
Now, blend the baking soda, oatmeal water, cornstarch, and children’s bath soap until well combined. Add 8 drops of lavender essential oil and mix thoroughly.
In the microwave, heat the mixture in 30-second intervals, totaling two minutes. Stir in between intervals. If the mixture remains sticky after two minutes, continue microwaving until it reaches the desired consistency. Allow it to cool for approximately 10 minutes.

- For added enjoyment, you can replace bubble bath with bath soap, making bath time even more entertaining!
- The oatmeal-infused water is optional; it provides extra soothing properties for your child’s skin, but it’s not a necessity.
- If you choose to use essential oils, ensure that they are safe for children, such as lavender oil.
