What is Horseradish
Horseradish sauce is a popular condiment made from grated horseradish root mixed with vinegar, sour cream or mayonnaise, among other ingredients.
Horseradish, a pungent root vegetable with a spicy, mustard-like flavor, has been used in culinary applications for thousands of years.
The ancient Greeks and Romans ate horseradish for its medicinal properties and pungent flavor.
By the Middle Ages, horseradish had made its way into European cuisine, where it was used in sauces to accompany meat dishes.
The modern version of horseradish sauce likely emerged in the 17th century, when German immigrants brought horseradish to the United States and began using it to make a creamy, tangy sauce.
