Homemade Mac and Cheese Recipe
Ingredients:
- 4 cups Dried Macaroni
- 1 whole Egg Beaten
- 1/4 cup (1/2 Stick or 4 Tablespoons) Butter
- 1/4 cup All-Purpose Flour
- 2-1/2 cups Whole Milk
- 2 teaspoons Dry Mustard, More if desired
- 1 pound Cheese, grated
- 1/2 teaspoon Salt, more to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon Ground Black Pepper
- Optional Spices: Cayenne Pepper, Paprika, Thyme
Directions:
Step 1: Cook macaroni until very firm.
Macaroni should be too firm to eat right out of the pot. Drain.
Step 2: In a small bowl, beat egg. In a large pot, melt butter and sprinkle in flour. Whisk together over medium-low heat. Cook mixture for five minutes, whising constantly. Don’t let it burn. Pour in milk, add mustard and whisk until smooth. Cook for five minutes until very thick.
Step 3: Reduce heat to low. Take 1/4 cup of the sauce and slowly pour it into beaten egg, whisking constantly to avoid cooking eggs. Whisk together until smooth.
Step 4: Pour egg mixture into sauce, whisking constantly. Stir until smooth.

Mac & Cheese looks good, I’ll have to try an egg in the recipe next time. And maybe stop buying the cheap DW soap. I keep getting grit on my “clean” dishes. I hate grit.
The egg helps the cheese to stick… the key is to not let the egg cook when you add it or you’ll get some scrambled egg in your M&C!
What’s NOT to love about Pier One for anything?!! Gosh, do I want a dishwasher like that one. LOVE this giveaway! And the recipe looks amazing… 🙂
that recipe is fabulous! and i could serve it in bowls from pier 1! 🙂
Looks yummy, Jen. I think I am going to try the toned down version…we’re weak when it comes to hot food! 😉
I’ve always loved Pier One! and it’s no different with their outdoor collection. Plus that mac and cheese looks yummy!
Oh I love a good homemade mac and cheese! I am currently without a dishwasher 🙁 when I get one again though I’ll have to try this, so many detergents don’t live up to their promises!
I was so pleased with how the Cascade Platinum worked! 😀
No, I have not tried Cascade Platinum and I would be up for the challenge.
Oohhh, this has more ingredients than the homemade mac & cheese I make – will have to try this one!
Try it! I’d love to hear what you think!
I am using Cascade Complete right now, but I have not used the Cascade Platinum, but I want to and take the Mac and Cheese challenge to see if it really works!
Oooo! Take it! You’ll be surprised that it cleans off every single speck of food 🙂
I have never tried mustard in my homemade mac and cheese recipe. Your recipe sounds delicious! I am going to pin this to make for my family 🙂
Thanks! Come back and let me know what you think once you’ve made the recipe.
I’ve tried Cascade but it’s not my regular dishwasher detergent. We recently bought a new dishwasher, which works much better than our old one did, but I’m still not always happy with the cleaning results. I’d be curious to try the Mac ‘n Cheese challenge. If nothing else, my daughter and I simply love mac ‘n cheese, so just having that to eat would be worth it. LOL!
Absolutely try it! And if you’re making the Mac N Cheese for your daughter, I recommend pulling back on the amount of seasoned salt and ground pepper. Younger tongues often prefer the more mild version.
The daughter in question is 26 (almost 27), so I don’t have to worry about toning down the spice. LOL!
Well if that’s the case…. add in the Cayenne and make that Mac n Cheese pop!!! 😀
I recently made some similar to this and used a crockpot. I love homemade macaroni and cheese. Yes, the challenge is getting the pot clean. I am glad cascade did the job.
no, I have not tried the cascade platinum.
I would try the mac and cheese challenge.
Bring it on, right!?!
I haven’t tried it , but would love to .
I will have to try this one. It looks so yummy and I bet my family will love it. <3
Do try it! But if you don’t like your Mac with some kick, take my advice on toning down the spices.
I would really love to try it
And I love Mac n cheese
Let me know if you take on the challenge! I’m completely amazed at how it’s changed doing the dishes for me.
i have never tried it but i would try it doing the challenge and maybe it would convince me to buy
I haven’t tried Cascade Platinum, but would love to and do the Mac n cheese dish as well.
That mac & cheese looks awesome and I’m also amazed that it was so easy to clean the pot afterwards! Thanks so much for linking up with #ShareTheWealthSunday!

Definitely try making it! Just be aware that my version has some spice… but if you keep out the mustard, it won’t have that kick.
Nothing beats homemade! Thanks for sharing at Thursday Favorite Things!
Seriously! My boys won’t even touch the stuff from the box. 🙂
first recipe ever that I heard about adding dry mustard!! wow i bet that gives this mac and cheese a delish pop of flavor! I so love the gooey, cheesy macaroni so can’t wait to try this recipe!
It really does add some serious pop to it… and some hidden kick (translated… hot). My husband loves it!

First off, the mac-and-cheese looks amazing! Would love to have bowl of it myself:)
Second, the cascade did an amazing job with this pot! I usually buy cascade but usually rinse the gunk first..Now I know what to do next time.
Third, yep had no idea about the garbage disposal thing. Wow! Thanks for sharing with us at the Home Matters Linky party. We love having you and hope you join us again!
Ha! Sounds like you picked up a lot from this article. Once I tried Cascade Platinum I couldn’t go back… it’s completely changed my relationship with my dishes 😀

This recipe has a little bit of hidden kick to it! But if you don’t want the kick, just skip the dried mustard (a secret ingredient). Happy cooking 🙂
