Best New Young Adult Books of the Year

Giving books is one of my favorite things — there’s nothing like giving my nieces some young adult books and hearing later how they just ate them up.

Reading has always been a passion of mine.

When my kids were born, I turned that love of literature to children’s books.

But as my boys get older, I’m loving learning and exploring the young adult genre just for myself!

Young Adult Books for Teens

Turtles All the Way Down

In his long-awaited return, John Green, the acclaimed, award-winning author of Looking for Alaska and The Fault in Our Stars, shares Aza’s story with shattering, unflinching clarity in this brilliant novel of love, resilience, and the power of lifelong friendship.

The Book of Dust: La Belle Sauvage (Book of Dust, Volume 1)

Malcolm Polstead is the kind of boy who notices everything but is not much noticed himself. And so perhaps it was inevitable that he would become a spy.

He finds a secret message inquiring about a dangerous substance called Dust — and the spy it was intended for finds him.

When she asks Malcolm to keep his eyes open, he sees suspicious characters everywhere… All are asking about the same thing: a baby girl named Lyra. Lyra is the kind of person who draws people in like magnets.

And Malcolm will brave any danger, and make shocking sacrifices, to bring her safely through the storm.

Strange the Dreamer

In this sweeping and breathtaking new novel by National Book Award finalist Laini Taylor, author of the New York Times bestselling Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy, the shadow of the past is as real as the ghosts who haunt the citadel of murdered gods.

Fall into a mythical world of dread and wonder, moths and nightmares, love and carnage.

Landscape with Invisible Hand

National Book Award winner M. T. Anderson returns to future Earth in a sharply wrought satire of art and truth in the midst of colonization.

They Both Die at the End

The Hate U Give

Goodreads Choice Awards Best of the Best  ∙  William C. Morris Award Winner ∙ National Book Award Longlist ∙ Printz Honor Book ∙ Coretta Scott King Honor Book

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends.

The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer.

What really went down that night? The only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does — or does not — say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

Tower of Dawn (Throne of Glass)

In the next installment of the New York Times bestsellingThrone of Glass series, follow Chaol on his sweeping journey to a distant empire.

Words in Deep Blue:

A beautiful love story for fans of Jandy Nelson and Nicola Yoon: two teens find their way back to each other in a bookstore full of secrets and crushes, grief and hope—and letters hidden between the pages.

Bull

Much like Lin-Manuel Miranda did in Hamilton, the New York Times best-selling author David Elliott turns a classic on its head in form and approach, updating the timeless story of Theseus and the Minotaur.

A rough, rowdy, and darkly comedic young adult retelling in verse, which NPR called “beautifully clever,” Bull will have readers reevaluating one of mythology’s most infamous monsters.
