When my mother-in-law, Helen, was 81 years old, my husband and I visited his parents for Christmas. We had NO money, but I got free little vials of perfume from cosmetics counters, sent away for premiums for using products, and spent very much time in Walgreen’s. We used small handmade gifts and used books; anything would’ve worked. We filled the stockings after they went to bed and hung them on the backs of the chairs in the kitchen. Then we waited until they came out and saw the Christmas surprise. Helen was so excited. We heard her say, “This is the first Christmas sock I’ve ever had.” What a joyful holiday we all shared.
