Words Only a Parent Would Say

A curse is affecting the nation. This blight is taking over the culture right out in broad daylight.

Person by person, this plague becomes more pronounced, and only the children of America (and sometimes their parents) realize how ridiculous it is.

When my boys were toddlers, my husband would absolutely fall over laughing at me because I would use all of these antiquated words…

But they all seemed to work!

When I was a kiddo, my father would absolutely lose his stuff.

But rather than swear at us, he would use some of these words. And yes, my brother and I would fall over laughing.

Old Fashioned Words Only a Parent Would Say. So true!

Our personal favorite was when my dad would yell at us to stop acting like “ninnies.”

Insert literally any swear word you’d like here. It definitely works. LOL!

Words only a parent (or your grandfather) would say

  • Ninny
  • Lollygag
  • Shenanigan
  • Gobbledegook
  • Horsing around
  • Dillydally
  • Goofball
  • Nincompoop
  • Cuss
  • Hooligan
  • Flabbergasted
  • Rascal
  • Tushy
  • Oopsy-daisies
  • Baloney
  • Malarkey
  • Hiney
  • Tomfoolery

Each and every one of these words have been uttered in my house. More than once.

Do you have a word you would add to the list?

  1. LOVE the list! I’d like to add, “imp”. My grandmother used it to describe a mischievous child. “You were such a little imp!”

  3. Shoot, if only more people would quit monkeying around and be respectful maybe there would be less violence and vandalism in the world. For crying out loud… 🙂

  4. Not from the US but we use a few of these at home 🙂

  5. Fiddlesticks!

And raggamuffin! (My mom always used to call me her raggamuffin. Not sure why that was a term of endearment but oh well!)

  6. I was blessed to link up after you on Family Fun Friday.

  7. I once heard someone call “it” Hanky Panky, I find that a much cuter term than the words some people use nowadays lol. Thanks for linking up to Friday Pin Fest 🙂

  8. Oh my goodness! I hate to admit that I use most of them on a regular basis! Eek! I am old! LOL! This was awesome and thanks for the wonderful giggle! Have a great rest of the weekend!
