With the Irish holiday coming up, I was trying to figure a new way to sneak in some St. Patrick’s Day fine motor practice without my son.

One of my sons struggles with his fine motor abilities.

It effects his ability to write well, which I know is frustrating to him.

We also make leprechaun traps in our house to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, so why not have a little leprechaun treasure hunt of our own!

Here’s my version of a St. Patrick’s Day Fine Motor Sensory Bin. This post contains affiliate links.

Materials:

  • Bin
  • Fine cut wood shred (but you could also use green Easter basket filler)
  • Thin paper straws
  • Gold Coins
  • Foam shamrock stickers

Note: I chose to use the fine cut wood shred because I just wanted to use something different and give the boys a different sensation from the usual fillers.

You can find this filler at any craft store or online.

We made the object of the game to see how many coins and shamrocks they boys could get using the straws as chopsticks.

They got 2 points for every single one they got out of the bin using the straws.

Then they received 1 point for every object they pulled out of the filler with their hands.

Using the straws as chopsticks really gave them a fine motor workout.

Don’t worry if you’re little one can’t actually use them like chopsticks.

Even holding a straw in each hand and then coordinating the straws together to pick up an object is tough work!

By hiding objects within the filler, it also gave the kids a chance to touch and play with the finely cut wood.

Have fun and get creative 🙂 My boys loved the tallying of points but just trying to get them out is a big part of the fun.
