Nationwide provided me with information regarding its SmartRide program.
Last month I told you about an easy way to save money on your insurance. Some of you were skeptical. “Come on,” you thought! It really can’t be that easy. But I’m telling you it is.
I’m quite excited to be teaming up with Nationwide to give you the inside scoop on a program that can lower your car insurance. In fact you can save 10% on your car insurance just for participating in the program, but you can save up to 40%. And no, that is not a typo! (Discounts vary by state.)
What is SmartRide?
SmartRide is Nationwide’s auto insurance program that evaluates driving behavior based on things like mileage, time of driving, fast accelerations, hard brakes and idle time. SmartRide is a really great option to take advantage of your good driving habits that you already have and learn if you need some improvements, too.
The SmartRide device is easy to install. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure it out.. Keep reading and I’ll show you just how simple it is. But first…
What’s the Catch?
When I heard about this program, I will admit I wondered what was the catch. No one likes the idea of big brother. Will Nationwide use the data they gather against me for higher rates?
Here’s the skinny: Your rates WILL NOT go up as a result of the program. And you get 10% off your insurance with Nationwide just for signing up.
So there’s NO catch. Absolutely no downside of trying out the program!
Just a heads up — discounts and program availability vary by state. It really just depends on what state you’re in.
How Easy Is It to Install SmartRide?
When I realized I was going to have to install something myself, I braced myself for a lot of frustration. However, it took under 5 minutes for me to get both of our cars set up, which also included the time it took me to look up where the plug-in was on Nationwide’s site.
You just look up your car’s make and model and get an easy visual of where to plug in the SmartRide Device. For most cars, including mine, it was right under the driver’s wheel dash. Didn’t know it was there, did you? I didn’t either.
What I’ve Learned About My Driving
I already know I’m a good driver. And Nationwide is proving it’s not all in my head. After installing the devices, I can see that we have a low rate of hard breaking.
The one thing I was surprised by is how much idle time we have. For example, the first week I drove 73 miles but was idle for 44 minutes. It really made me wonder how on earth that was possible! Most of my driving is local; however, we have a long wait at a stoplight to jump onto the local highway as well as multiple train lines running through our town. (Have you ever had to sit through a freight train barely moving 20 miles an hour?)
How Can I Get SmartRide?
If you’re an existing Nationwide member, just call your personal agent or 877-On-Your-Side (877-699-6877).
If you’re a new member, you can sign up for SmartRide during Nationwide’s quote process.
And speaking of safe driving, here’s a little history of car safety highlighting a century of automotive innovations. Did you know a Hollywood actress actually invented turn signals? Crazy!
