I love it, thanks so much - this should totally help my 7 yr old - if nothing more than seeing that there are other ways to achieve the same thing. We do it with maths - try a different approach to get to the answer, work with what works for you etc etc. I can see her trying this when we get home from school tonight… and hopefully her own joy in trying this. She’s going to want to have laces on all her shoes now…. Thanks- the video really helped to get it.

I am excited to try this with my almost 7 yo he struggles with fine motor and has severe adhd making learning difficult sometimes. He honestly has no interest in learning and hopefully this easy method will be the answer for him too!! Bc we too currently buy the no tie ones or I tie them and with an almost 1 yo as well anything my older can do independently is a godsend.

This method of shoe-tying was an absolute life-saver for me! I'm 14 and could not tie my shoes for years, at least not until I found this. My fine motor skills never fully developed due to a medical condition. Countless OT's tried to teach me, but the traditional method just didn't work. Who knew all it would take was 1 internet search? This was so gratifying after 10 years of being convinced I'd never tie my shoes myself. Thank you for posting it!

Hello there! I am an outpatient pediatric OT! I do like this method and use it for a few of my kiddos but there is one drawback that I've noticed through my experiences. Oftentimes, if the kid does not untie them appropriately or tries to untie by pulling the end of the string, it ends up in a nice little knot. Just be aware of this when teaching your kids! I have actually had much better success with my fine motor kiddos by using the traditional method (loop and wrap around) while practicing with a color contrast shoe lace (ex. yellow on one side and red on the other) and by telling them a cute little pirate story to help them remember the steps! Just offering some other thoughts, but very glad this was successful for your child! Good luck everyone else!

My first question would be what does the school OT say about how the fine motor struggles are affecting your child's handwriting? I had them assess my kid for hand strength and ability to manipulate a pencil first.

Hello!! I am reaching out because I saw your pin on Pinterest and I said, this!! My kid who is about to finish 1st grade is struggling with this as well other things, and I really believe that he has a fine motor issue. I had mentioned it to his speech therapist as well as the pediatrician, but non of them can point me to a good start. A what age do you take your child to an OT?? I need to find out more about this. Thanks so much for this post!!

Yep..... we struggled forever until I reached out to some of my OT contacts to figure out an alternative method. It really did save us in the house.
