Finding The Best Sunless Tanner Lotion For Your Skin Type

We all love the skin-kissed look we get from tanning but the damage from the sun just isn’t worth it. I’m so tired of being the pasty-white person in the room but looking like an orange oompa loompa from bronzing creams scares the bejesus out of me. This year, I want to avoid sun exposure while adding some color to my cheeks.
When it comes to finding the best sunless tanning lotion, there are a wide number of products available to choose from. Just thinking about all of the products out there gave me a headache. It all depends on your skin tone and where on the body you are applying the lotion. So where to start? It may take a few tries before you find just the right kind of product for you, but here’s a quick guide to what you need to look out for.
What Is The Best Sunless Tanner For Your Skin Type?
When shopping for tanning lotion, take a look at the product to see what it recommends. Many people are tempted to go for “deep” tanners, but those with fair skin would be far better suited to light or medium tanning products. Most tanning lotion brands now come in each type of shade, allowing you to choose the best one for you. If your skin is particularly fair, you can also try using a tanning moisturizer for more gradual results.
If you have particularly sensitive skin then you may find that some sunless tanning lotions arenÃt suitable for you. This may limit your options (though manufacturers are now coming out with sensitive varieties of famous tanners) or you could opt to buy a face tanner for the whole body (they’re generally less harsh).
Face Vs. Body
When it comes to self tanning, it’s not just your general skin type that matters but also where you’re applying the lotion. Applying self tanning lotion designed for the body to the face can cause blocked pores. The best sunless tanning lotion for the face will be lighter than other lotions and often include SPF protection against the sun to ensure that this sensitive area stays protected.
Why It’s Important To Think Carefully About Your Skin Tone
Everyone’s skin is different, and self tanning lotions can look different on different base colors. It’s important to understand what works best for your skin and how much, or how little, self tan you need to apply to achieve the best results. Although it’s nice to have a sun-kissed glow, we’ve all seen those who have overdone it and gone a deep shade of orange!
If you’ve got very ivory pale skin then it may be that self tanning lotions won’t ever make you look like you were born and live in the Mediterranean. Even the best sunless tanning lotion can’t completely change what you look like, but by picking the right product you can help to achieve the healthy glow you’re looking for.

I’ve been struggling with finding one of these forever. I never use the tanner on my face, just because I know I would screw it up. (Let’s face it, you know I’d screw it up too. Then again, it may make for a funny blog post).
Have you tried those tanning wipes? I wondered if that would be easier to apply evenly. I’m scared to try them on my own so I’m secretly hoping you will be my guinea pig. 🙂
I have tried at least five brands of self tanner, and every single one has caused an allergic reaction. So it’s red itchy bumps all over my tan legs, or no bumps on my lily white legs. But I haven’t tried the face-only tanner as an option – maybe I’ll try one more time. Thanks for the tip!
