My 2nd grader, Vman, is a Cub Scout. Which only means one thing every winter… the Pinewood Derby! It’s a serious competition every year. (Be sure to read what I think of all of the craziness.) But my boys sure do love this event. Even though my kindergartener is too young to be a member, he still wanted to make his own car with Papa. And at the end of the day, the competition should be less about winning and more about the quality time kids get to spend with their dads or grandpas.

I remember when my son and I did it and we had a blast. I was too dismayed by the level that some took it. It is like anything these days, it isn’t about the kids it is about the adults. That is a lesson that I pounded in both of kids heads and that it is I am doing this as a shared experience with you and if we win then good, if we don’t then good but we tried and had a good time.
Yes. My son had a great time. But I think he would have been heartbroken if he had put in all of the effort and not at least placed in the race.
That’s a neat-looking car! What does the “H” stand for?
I also come from a family that likes making things. Both parents were working full-time so my siblings and I appreciated the quality time my parents spent with us when we were growing up.
The H stands for my son – Hbomb! He loves having his initial on everything.
Awesome looking car! Sounds like fun, assuming the competition isn’t too fierce. Happy WW!
The competition was crazy — we have an aeronautical engineer in the group. Smoked everyone!
I LOVE pinewood derby events. Some of the cars have very creative paint jobs. Happy WW.
Seeing how the kids (er parents) decorated were fun. I personally liked the ones where you could tell the personality of the kiddo.
My son was a scout for four years and I do remember the Pinewood. Both fun and stressful.
Happy WW!

Derbys are such old fashioned fun. 🙂
That is so sweet! And what a lovely car.
