This week, the following books tickled my young readers:
1. The Mitten Tree by Candace Christiansen; illustrated by Elaine Greenstein
The Mitten Tree: In this sweet book, an older woman notices a young boy who does not have a pair of mittens. She decides to knit him a pair and secretly places them on the tree by the bus stop. Before she knows it, she is knitting for all of the children but no one knows it’s her. Or do they?
MY TWO CENTS: The Mitten Tree teaches children that giving isn’t about getting recognition but rather giving just to help others. We read this story every Christmastime and it has become a favorite.
Sunset of the Sabertooth (Magic Tree House Series): If you haven’t heard of this incredible book series, then welcome! The Magic Tree House Books follow big brother Jack and younger sister Annie on some wild adventures. Each book takes them to a new place and time, from ancient Egypt to the Knights of the Round Table. Children learn about these place and are introduced to history and geography as well as excitement.
MY TWO CENTS: This series is simply wonderful! Start reading these to introduce your child to chapter books. The exciting stories will keep their attention and have them asking for more. And for kids who can read the series themselves, they will devour the Magic Tree House books, as many parents will attest to.
