Book Nook: Scaredy Squirrel at Night; Delia’s Dull Day

December 7, 2012 by Mommy Evolution Leave a Comment

Friday Book Nook!

  1. Delia’s Dull Day by Andy Myer
  2. Scaredy Squirrel at Night by Melanie Watt

Delia’s Dull Day: The next time your kiddo tells you what a boring day she had, pull out this book, which pokes fun at the thought of having a dull day. Delia practically sleepwalks through her day as elephants tromp through her house, a pirate rides the bus and butterflies flit out of her tuba.

The “B” word (boring!) isn’t allowed in my house. Delia opened up a discussion about how my son is missing all of the incredible things around him.

MY TWO CENTS: Andy Myer has created a wonderfully boring story that tickles the funny bone and reminds kids life isn’t boring if you just pay attention to the exciting world around you.

Scaredy Squirrel at Night: Melanie Watts has written some of our favorite books in our house. Scaredy Squirrel is off on another adventure, surviving the night in this installation of the Scaredy Squirrel series.

Melanie brings a warm sense of humor and tongue in cheek approach”’ to a topic that brings children to tears — bad dreams and scared thoughts at night. Her approach is evident with the book opening, with Scaredy Squirrel warning kids to check under their beds before reading the book.

I personally love the idea of using cupcakes to distract any fairies coming in the night because they have such a sweet tooth. Unicorns, dragons and ghosts are also be to avoided.

MY TWO CENTS: Melanie Watts has hit gold in her Scaredy Squirrel books, taking on anxiety-laced topics and turnings them into approachable, funny discussions for children.
