Baking Gingerbread and Sugar Cookies with Betty Crocker

December 17, 2013 by Mommy Evolution 36 Comments

Betty Crocker was kind enough to provide me with a goody bag to test out before giving two away to my readers. All opinions are my own.

As you may have noticed, I’ve gone a bit cookie gaga this holiday season! From my Ultimate Online Cookie Exchange to rounding up more than 100 cookie recipes, it’s been baking central over here.ย What’s really bowled me over is how many of you are joining in on the fun!

This holiday, Betty Crocker is sharing the 10 trends they can’t get enough of this holiday season — plus recipes to try out in your own kitchen. To see the latest trends, visit Betty Crocker’s Red Hot Holiday Trends website.ย Because I have two boys, my favorite trend is making Crafty Cookies with the Kids.

I love baking. I may not be a pastry chef, but there’s something about making warm cookies. So I was excited to get a chance to try out Betty Crocker’s Sugar Cookie and Gingerbread mixes. It’s the first time I’d tried making cookies from a mix, so I was curious how they would turn out.

Unlike refrigerated packaged dough where you just spoon the mixture onto the cookie sheets, making these are the real deal without having to measure out all of the spices and whatnot. You still need to supply the eggs and butter.

FlourTin

To begin, I pulled out my grandmother’s sugar and flour tins. I love how old-fashioned they are. She used them all of the time, and I have such fond memories of hanging out in the kitchen with her as she baked. I always feel more connected to my grandmother whenever I bake anything.

I also got out our superhero and Star Wars cookie cutters. What can I say? I have boys! Of course, I also used my new holiday cookie cutouts, but baking is supposed to be all about fun. And what’s more fun than Spider-Man, Darth Vader and Captain America?

RawCookie2

One thing I had forgotten about it how much cookie dough loves to stick to the counter. So be sure to flour that sucker down.

RawCookies

Here are my lovely cookies before I popped them into the oven. And yes, that is a Yoda cookie in the upper left hand corner. Nothing says Christmas like Yoda, right?

Gingerbread1

I really wasn’t sure what to expect with the gingerbread mix, but I was pleasantly surprised! These cookies baked up moist, chewy and spiced just right.ย  Gingerbread2

The sugar cookies also kept their shape in the oven and taste delicious. We’ve had a lot of fun decorating them all. However, most of them were consumed by the boys before I could even grab a picture!

Helpful Tip: Whether you’re a novice or pro, everyone could use a little help when it come to high-stakes holiday meals. Betty’s Kitchen experts are on standby to answer your urgent kitchen questions this holiday season. We have made a few batches of oatmeal scotchies and several other varieties that are just a ton of ingredients crammed into a cookie batter.
