Don’t Waffle on a Good Breakfast

When I lived in downtown Chicago, there were several Swedish diners that served authentic Swedish waffles, and I was lucky enough to live just around the corner from one — Ann Sather.

When I first discovered these treasure troves, I thought I had found heaven.

I can actually inhale the scent of these wonderful places just thinking about them.

You see, some people are egg people. They like omelets or scrambled eggs or Eggs Benedict.

Not me! I’m a waffle girl.

So when I heard about Swedish waffles, I thought I’d have to try them out to see what all of the fuss is about.

History of Swedish Waffles

Swedish waffles, also known as “vÃ¥fflor” in Swedish, have been a beloved treat in Sweden for centuries.

While the origin of the waffle itself is unclear, it is believed that the Swedish waffle has its roots in the 17th century, when the Dutch introduced the waffle iron to Sweden.

Traditionally, Swedish waffles are made using a heart-shaped waffle iron, which creates a unique and distinctive shape.

In Sweden, they are enjoyed as a snack or dessert, but they are also commonly served for breakfast with a side of bacon or sausage.

My first surprise was that the Swedes do not put syrup on their waffles. Oh no! 

They’re traditionally served with whipped cream and wild lingonberry jam.

Authentic Swedish Waffles Recipe

Now, I love celebrating International Waffle Day as the next person (which is March 25), but really, any day is a good day for a true authentic Swedish waffle.

So let’s get baking! 

This easy, delicious recipe for authentic Swedish waffles is from the chefs at Felix Lingonberry Jam in Sweden.

And for a low carb option, try a keto waffle.

Ingredients

  • 3 ½ oz butter
  • 1 â…” cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups plus 3 tablespoons milk
  • 2 eggs

Directions for Swedish Waffle Recipe

Step 1: Melt butter.

Step 2: Whip together flour, baking powder and salt with half of the milk until you have an even batter.

Step 3: Pour in the rest of the milk, eggs and the melted butter, whip until thoroughly mixed.

Step 4: Heat the waffle iron and brush with butter.

Step 5: Pour in 6 tablespoons of batter and bake until golden brown.

      NO! Don’t buy lingonberries. Try cloudberries. That is what I always had with my waffles when I was growing up. The lable may read hjortron, which is the same thing. I am Swedish and grew up in Sweden. I am from the northern part and in the south of Sweden they do eat weird things.

  2. I’m a waffle girl myself, but I like to eat it with jam more than syrup. My husband things it’s strange, but I love it! We have breakfast dates every Friday, where we take turns cooking each other breakfast and watch the news or one of our favorite shows on DVR. We’ll definitely be putting this on the menu this month.     Swedes do not wat waffles with whipped cream! Ever! Sugar and cloudberrier, or sugar and lingonberries. I prefer cloudberries and Ikea has them. Swedish pancakes and all related foods are never ever served with whipped cream in Sweden.
