I’ll be honest – growing up we only had the canned cranberries at Thanksgiving.

It really was a pitiful looking side dish.

And it received the attention that it deserved.

I never even knew cranberry sauce could be this exciting and delicious until I got older!

History of Cranberry Sauce

Cranberry sauce has been a staple of Thanksgiving and holiday dinners in the United States since the 1800s, and it is believed to have originated in the Northeast region of the country.

The first recorded recipe for cranberry sauce appeared in 1796 in the first American cookbook, “American Cookery” by Amelia Simmons.

It was a simple recipe that called for boiling the cranberries with sugar and water until they burst and softened.
